Album: Songs for Maria Sabina
Release Date: on going project
About:
Near the end of April in 2010, I was asked to be part of a group art show. The art show,
Techjano/a: Hybrid Logic, is "an experimental project by six San Antonio artists and the Museo Alameda that explores the temporal nature of cultural phenomena and material life. Culture and it's accoutrements are not static but constantly evolving to reflect histories past, present, and future."
My sound piece for the Techjano exhibit is a tribute to the work and life of Maria Sabina, an important "curandera" or shaman from the Mazatec Indians of Oaxaca, Mexico. Using field recordings of Maria Sabina recorded by R. Gordon Wasson in the 50's, I will create a sound scape in the museum. My hope is that through awareness we can realize the benefits of ancient and indeginous knowledge and do what we can to preserve it.
In an effort to raise awareness of Maria Sabina's impact to Western ideas, culture, and thought; and to further incorporate technology into the piece...I uploaded the found field recordings and invite anyone to download the file, remix it, and create new sounds and songs which will then be uploaded here for anyone to freely download.
Thank you,
Ernest Gonzales
