Friends of Friends Vol 2 Out Now
We have a Music Recommendation for you! Be sure to go have a listen to Friends of Friends Volume 2 ft. Larytta and Bauchamp. Larytta are a pair of Swiss based producers and they have a different approach to the sounds they create. Very interesting and unique dance music...must be something in the Swiss cheese. It's really easy for people to listen to a style of music and create cheap knockoffs but its rare and surprising when you here something a bit new with electronic music. Larytta definitely goes into the category of the people doing something different with dance/electronic music. In case you are unfamiliar with the Friends of Friends model, one producer is invited to release some songs, that producer invites a second one as well as a designer to create artwork which is then placed on an organic tee. You buy the tee and get the album plus a ton of remixes. Check it out at www.fofmusic.net or get it on iTunes. P.S. Lazer Sword went hard on their remix.

Butcher Bear and Charlie Interview

Butcher Bear & Charlie play this First Friday, September 4th at GET BUSY (@ Limelight, San Antonio) so we thought we'd do a little interview. Interview by DJ Jester the Filipino Fist

Where does the name Butcher Bear & Charlie come from?

Kinda Dumb. I'm Butcher Bear & she's Tennille, but she goes by Charlie. see Reference http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5juK-UrgJG0

You know, I first heard of you from my buddy Bart Koch. He approached me at GET BUSY one night and said you'd be perfect for our party....

Charlie and I were starting to do the Matt & Bart show just a few episodes before Matt left to the upper west side coast for another job..

I have to tell you..this party on September 4th is going to be HUGE. What can the fine folks in SA expect?

There is going to be a real Bear, and a real Charlie. We have some new song Maxxxes we have for y'all. Hopefully some dancing, and I am bringing some presents for the San Antonio. Think yummy sounds good.

I can't stop listening to "Carbomb." Does Butcher Bear & Charlie have any music released?

STOP LISTENING TO CARBOMB. until we play it on Friday. We are putting out a 4-song 12" that comes out next February.

I read in the Austin Chronicle you have your own label, (iN)SECT Records. What's that all about? How long has it been around and who is on your roster?

It's a tiny label that i run. My first release was last November, so we're still baby sized. I'm putting out bands that i love, all by people that I'm a fan of. I've put out This Moment In Black History, they're from Cleveland, California Party Girls which is my friend Lucky Jeremy solo. We used to play in Sean Na Na together, and just Recently, Explosion Horse, which is Clarke Wilson solo, the singer/bass player for Those Peabodys.

45's by: Guilty Simpson over beats by Reaganometry (keys for Attack Formation), the next thing that's coming out in October is the Dudley Perkins/Georgia Anne Muldrow split 45.

12"s by: Reaganometry, Prince Klassen, This Horn of Afrika, Total Sound Group Direct Action Committee, Society of Friends 'discography', and a super limited run of all drum records by Adam Hatley (Those Peabodys, Red X Red M), Tony Nozero (Drums & Tuba, Paul Newman), Trivet Wingo (The Sword) and Eric Conn (Tia Carrera, Those Peabodys).

And we already put out a couple things to.

You still doin' Attack Formation?

Yep. We've been recording the last bits of stuff at our house. But we have an entire record done, just need to mix it. The next show we're playing is our yearly ATTAK (iN)FORMATION show in January.

I see you are a fan of Dudley Perkins aka Declaime. I always thought Fatlip and Dudley Perkins would make a cool combo. Don't ask me why. I think they both understand "lonely." If Butcher Bear & Charlie could collaborate with another group, who would it be and why?

I totally get what you mean. He's an old soul. The way the raw emotions come out over the speakers is great. I've only talked to Dudley through e-mail, but I'm a huge fan of his and Georgia Anne Muldrow. I'm totally blessed to be able to put out a record for them. and the songs they gave me were banging. I think we could rip shit up with Spank Rock. Dream List would be, in no order: RAS G, Jack White, Martyn and DJ Mel.

What's next for ya'll?

Gonna go to the Bay and then to the Chi. But first, how do we play at the San Antonio ZOO? Can anyone help us? I have been putting out a couple of Podcasts too and they are free!

The Inside Story with DJ Jester the Filipino Fist

DJ Jester just finished recording a brand new mix that will be available at Limelight in San Antonio this First Friday and we had some questions about it so here they are.

You just finished a new dj mix called "The Inside Story" What inside story are you referring to?

There's not really one story I'm referring to.
I'm exposing my feelings. Not really physical joy or pain but a peak into my psyche. My soul. My thoughts. It's like they say, when you write it down it helps you get over it. This is me writing it down.

What inspired you and your track selection for this particular mix?

Music, really, has been my best friend since as long as I can remember. One thing I realized when I was taking notes and putting this together is how much I used to love lyrics (especially of the east coast emcee variety) and how in the last couple of years I have been listening more for beats and melodies rather than lyrics. If anything, it brought me back there. Other inspirations include the films of Woody Allen, living alone in a city, and a few too many self-help books.

There are a lot of samples from movies used in the mix? Do you think they help tell the inside story?

Definitely. I probably watch at least one movie a day, if not two. I have a doc in my computer titled "filmquotes" that I constantly go back to if I hear something that particularly strikes me or if I think it speaks the truth. There were so many quotes I didn't use in this mix that I don't know if I'll ever use because they just sound too whiny or pathetic. As with putting songs together or setting up a good joke, you gotta know when to hold back and when to pull the trigger. When to say this. When to say that. There's also that question of "Do I really want the world to know I think like that?..Like, that much?" I also wanted to organize the songs in a way that it would build, tell a story and still hold true to the DJ Jester dialectic.

The opening sample describes what you are about to hear as a musical interpretation of past relationships. Why are relationships a reoccuring theme for your mixes?

I can go on for days about this. Growing up youngest of four, Filipino in Texas, yada yada yada. . .Let me just say. I think I really could write books on relationships and social dynamics. I'm just wired like that. It's something I think about every minute of the day. Like, is she smiling at me because she knows me or does she think I'm cute? Did I get a discount at Jiffy Lube because he thought I was gay? Are they really happy? Am I cursed?

If you could have a relationship with a specific genre of music which one would it be and why?

I would have a fun night out with jazz but probably wouldn't call that much because I'd think I was too intimidated and not as smart. I'd take rock n' roll to a baseball game and get lucky before the game was over. Country and I would road trip through the south like nobody's business. Hip-Hop, I love you but I hate you. Guess you could say, I kinda want all of that.
